When there are issues with TCP/IP in Windows XP that prevent networking components from functioning properly, you can perform the following steps to reset TCP/IP and Winsock. You have to follow these steps, as TCP/IP is a core component of Windows XP and therefore cannot be uninstalled.
According to Microsoft, these steps work just as well as uninstalling and re-installing TCP/IP. There have been times when I follow these stpes, and my problem was not resolved. In those cases, using System Restore to roll back to an earlier date has solved the problem.
C:\> netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt C:\> netsh winsock reset
Then, you can restart the PC using:
C:\> shutdown /r /t 3
Note: resetting Winsock may cause applications which use it to no longer work. If a particular network-aware application ceases to work, simply re-installing that application usually fixes its Winsock LSPs.
